Bush – The Science of Things

Before you read the rest of this review let’s get one thing straight. I’m a
huge Bush fan and this article is bound to contain high levels of bias.
Moving along, it has been 3 years since the last Bush album, Deconstructed
not included. Obviously with so much time in between records, there is a
lot of curiosity and no doubt high expectations surrounding their third
release, “The Science of Things”.

Well, Bush fans need not worry as the
band is back with more of the same that made them what they are. Don’t be
fooled by the albums first single, “The Chemicals Between Us”. This album
is not a meshing of their previous two albums and Deconstructed. The rest of
the album generally follows the same guitar driven rock that perpetuated the
last two albums. Although, it is more along the lines of “Sixteen Stone”,
rather than “Razorblade Suitcase” as the band has opted for the heavier
sound of their multi-platinum debut.

There isn’t much, if anything on this
album that hasn’t been done before. In fact, it is largely a rehashing of
past material. This is not an album that will be called one of the landmark
albums of the year in terms of incredible lyrics and some new sounds. In
fact, I have found it quite difficult to determine what exactly is being
said on the various songs, but that being said, one could argue for my own
mental inadequacies. However, with that being said, that doesn’t make it a
bad record. On the contrary, it’s very good.

There are indeed some good
tracks on this album such as my personal favourite, “Warm Machine” (the song
that I feel has the best chance of selling the album), “Jesus Online”, “The
Chemicals Between Us”, “Prize Fighter”, and “Let the Cables Sleep”.
So what am I saying exactly? Well, this is a good album that any Bush fan
will like, myself included, that brings us the same sort of material that we
liked about the band in the first place. Moreover, they have also gone with
the heavier sound which I prefer. However, the former point is where my
gripe with this record lies. It is more of the same and there really is
nothing new. Still, it’s a great album that would make a good addition to
anyone’s collection.

If it was any other band it would be an 8.
Because it’s Bush, it gets an 8.5 outta 10.
