Something strange happened today...
On Friday evening, I received a phone call from a friend of mine, whose own friend works and studies in London. My friend's friend was distressed and "spooked out" (her words, not mine) due to an encounter the day before.
What happened was, she was walking down the street (not sure which street. Sorry!) and noticed a wallet on the floor. She bent down to pick it up and called out to an Arabian man in front of her. She said: "Excuse me, Sir, is this wallet yours? You seem to have dropped it." He turned round and replied: "Oh! Thanks, thanks a lot. I must reward you."
My friend's friend thought he was going to pull out a fiver, or something like that. But he put his wallet away and just mumbled to her ear: "I won't give you any money - all I will say is; do not be in London on the 18th of October."
Quite taken aback by this, as anyone would be, she went to the nearest Police station (again, I'm not sure of which Police station) and informed the Police of her experience.
This is when it gets spooky.
She was asked to look through a book of 'suspected' terrorists to see if she could identify him, and you'll never guess what - she was able to pick him out from the book!
I have no idea what is happening now, but it is spooky. Of course, the man could have been hoaxing, but, if so, why is he on record as a suspected terrorist? The WTC Bombers managed to keep their "initial" terror strikes under wraps for years, probably. Surely a real terrorist wouldn't be so silly as to disclose this kind of information to a randomised member of the public (that being my friend's friend!)?
Remember, this is not a chain e-mail, and it won't even make the news. All I can say is that I will be awaiting the 18th October with much unease and anxiety.
I imagine I am one of the first to know about this, since the relevant authorities will not be revealing their findings until a later date - if they prove substantial at all, that is. IF THERE IS any substance to it, I can envisage a mass evacuation in London on the 18th.
I would like your opinions on this, I know you live or work in London so it could affect you. I don't know what to make of it, personally. A colleague reassures me that such a forecasted incident is ninety-nine percent unfeasible. I tend to agree, but I am just wondering what I should do, because it leaves me in a precarious position; it makes me feel burdened because I have been informed of something - third party - which could leave the city in dilapidation. This is where 'my' trademark "Knowledge is power" slogan backfires on me.
All I can say is that the man my friend's friend identified was a known (suspected) terrorist. That is the part which spooks me because the chance of a hoax lessens when you realise the capabilities of the "man" in question. However, if the Government were to be informed of this, they would surely take drastic action and inform airports across the continent (and Northern Africa) nearer the time, to be on the lookout for any suspicious dudes.
Anyway, cheerio

A good philosophy, of course, but no substitute for caution. :)

Terrorists can't really do jack when it comes to bombing or using airplanes as missles right now. Mainly because security all over the world is so high. But, what they CAN do is release a biological chemical. Whatever this "suspected terrorist" warned the friend of a friend, it should not be taken lightly. Then again, maybe instead of actually trying to cause an actual act of terrorism, they are just planting seeds of doubt in everyone to cause a scare or even a panic. I could go on and on with a list of what could happen and what couldn't happen, but all we can do is wait and see if anything happens. Like Tianna said, you shouldn't barricade yourself in your house but instead (like slinky said) be cautious and always keep a lookout for suspicious people. You never know, you might end up being a hero by catching something and preventing it from happening.

Well, let's look at it this way. Your chances of coming down with anthrax are worse than getting hit by a bus full of school children on a saturday. We're so worked up over some Anthrax spores in the mail, and yet thousands die in car accidents, and we don't think anything about fixing it. I think that's pretty ironic.
On top of it, Security is pretty tight, but no security is perfect. A lot of good 20 security guards do when i drive my Rider truck *over* them, through the front lobby, and hit the detonator and blow the 2 tons of fertilizer in the back... tightened security my ass.
You all heard about the guy that ran to the front of the plane heading to Chicago screaming "Save the Sears Tower! Save the Sears Tower!". A lot of good all that extra security did... they managed to get the guy down, but if there were more people on the plane, trying to take it over, it'd not be a question.
All this terrorist bullshit is simply stupid. Move on with your lives. If you have something important and factual, then present it. But "don't be in London on the 18th" is like saying "Don't walk across the street". You tell these things to 2 year olds.

Add 3 more levels of separation and statisically you can relate anyone to Kevin Bacon... come on... I read a chain letter that said some Canadian wife whose husband was of such background, left a note on his wife's side of the bed on the morning of Sept 10th, saying he had to leave to "fight for what he believed in", and that "Canada would have their day on Oct 31st".
Think things through. Take a breath, and laugh your ass off. I have an atom-storage box I'd like to sell you for only 9,999 YEN for those who don't...
Sorry, but I can't stand it when people say "what if..." to the most proposterous things. I'm tempted to go start my own religion some times because I'm sure I could get so many followers.
On on Artimus's comment (yes, a comment on a comment), about terrorism being just about impossible due to heightened security... the terrorists on Sept 11th were low-tech. What that means is anyone can do what they did, given the right mind-set. A box cutter down your pants in front of your fly will still get by security. The threat of violence is more powerful than anything else beside the execution of violence. It is so easy to turn a commercial plane into a bomb. Don't kid yourself, the Thought Police have not been sent out to protect us. We feel safe because we believe, or believed, ourselves to be safe. Security is half measures taken to ensure safety, and the other half is psychological, assurance in these measures.
