Conor's Weekly Music #10

By: Conor
on Tuesday, April 11th 2000 at 5:17pm

And they're off... Week 10. Yes the final week of this little writing adventure is upon us. I'm sad to say that the funds are no longer there in the budget to keep up this little escapade. All negotiations have broke down and I don't think that I can keep this up anymore. I know you are all certainly disheartened by this crushing news. The one thing that I can afford is the 3 or 4 kleenex's that my readers need to wipe those eyes. Okay, so maybe I've confused a few people here right? How can I say that there wasn't money in the budget to finance my page when the truth is well, I'm not getting paid? Good question. Basically I've decided to hire an agent and test the internet waters so to speak. See who's out there and what's available. Sounds fair enough right? If I can get paid to do this and find a better more read page then why shouldn't I do it? Right On! And good news Pumpkin's haters, they have finally been dethroned in the finale, go Canada. Fight the power and enjoy

Song of the Week

In honour of this great country of ours, I thought why not jump the gun and make the song of the week, "Oh Canada". Why? Because I amÂ….

The Race for World Dominatrixes

  1. Player L - 468pts
  2. Player D - 21.9pts
  3. Player C - 0pts

So if this is the end, and I think it is, it looks like we'll never really know who will win this race...

Little thoughts for Little People...

Okay. So last time I checked spring had officially arrived and with it, at least I would like to think, the arrival of warmer weather for us Igloo dwellers. But low and behold, but a few days ago what did I behold on the ground? Gasp! Snow! What's up with that? Now let's get this straight. I have nothing against snow. It's white and fluffy and toxic but so much fun to play with and in, no? Plus, being Canadian I'm kinda born with an innate love of the stuff. But winter has come and again and I like my warm weather too. I don't like getting screwed by these freak snow storms. They blow chunks. So I can only hope this is truly the last that we'll see of it in the sunny south of Ontario until next winter (I would have no qualms however with a freak July flurry or two)Â…Staying with this weather topic, why is it that whenever we, at least us Canadians are hard pressed for something to discuss, the weather is always first on our lists? Doesn't matter when or where, one of the first things to discuss is always the weather? Am I wrong? No, of course not. Interesting isn't it? Is it because it is something that everyone can relate too? Or is everyone really incredibly fascinated by the subject? If so then what kind of ratings is the Weather Network getting? Truly a question for the agesÂ…So new Pearl Jam has hit the net today and will be hitting the radio tomorrow (Tuesday). First impressions? Well, I'm liking the song but it is different. It seems more, how about rock like. As in Q107 rock like. Pearl Jam is or has become a genuine rock band. Of course one can't base the whole album on the first single that I've heard but it is interesting. Certainly a far cry from the grunge glory of the early 90's. By the way, the new album is now going to be hitting us a bit early. A whole week. May 16th to be exact so start counting the days...

Richard Ashcroft's solo debut has been delayed until at least mid June but it may be further off still...

On the topic of new albums, guess who apparently has a new album due to hit store shelves in August? Limp Bizkit. I kid you not fans. I have to admit that I'm shocked to hear this especially since their last album will only have been out for about a year. Granted there's nothing wrong with bands releasing new albums every year but I read about market saturation somewhere and it's coming to mind here. I just hope that I'm not sick of them by then. In my search for info for this perhaps final, yet electrifying section in my weekly piece of B.S., I came across a review of an Oasis/Travis show in what I presume was the Bay Area. The reviewer wasn't terribly impressed with Oasis' performance, wasn't blown away by Travis, and generally speaking, wasn't too impressed with British rock in general. To that I reply, you American's are cocky fucked up pieces of shit. All you give a shit is about the next band to have one song that will be played and over played for a span of 2 months before fading away into oblivion. How many bands on U.S. radio sound identical? What's the difference between bands like Vertical Horizon and Stroke 9? Maybe Blink 182 and Goldfinger and the Suicide Machines? How about all of those rap/rock clones like Korn, Incubus, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit. Need I go on? Now of course it's going to seem like I'm being hypocritical. I do like all of those bands that I've mentioned. But those aren't the only type of bands that I like. My tastes, and the alternative tastes of Canadians are much more varied than those of our lower neighbours who are too caught up in themselves to ever really notice anything else that might be coming from another country. It's kind of incredible to note that countries like Canada and the UK, with signicantly lower populations, can still have similar numbers of talented groups. Well I guess much like comparing elephants to humans, the bigger you are, the more shit you pump out... Speaking of concerts, saw the Stereophonics, a band far superior to most U.S. bands and while they didn't put on a hell of a show (no wild theatrics), sonically, they were amazing. The similarities between the CD and live performance were close. Basically if you buy one of their CD's, you know what they sound like live. Amazing band and my opinion of them has now improved with this performance. The Charlatans were something of a new entity to me having not really heard any of their material. They weren't bad but seemed to really electrify the crowd, more so than the Stereophonics. However as my colleague noted, their music is much mellower and I was somewhat puzzled by the energy displayed by the crowd. Still, though I didn't see all of their set my interest was piqued and I may have to listen to them some more, though their music seems more appropriate for those times when one is fucked up, in any manor of ways...

So fastball looks to follow such bands as Third Eye Blind, Smash Mouth, and Sugar Ray. How so you ask? Well, they're releasing a new album in September entitled "The Harsh Light of Day" and I'm sure they don't want to be 1-hit wonders, something those previous bands miraculously managed to avoid. Unfortunately, commercially for Tonic, this seems to be their predicament...

So they're finally making a Tomb Raider Movie. But Angelina Jolie as the star? This could be good...

I'm close to entering the world of the rave for the first time. My first experience will be this weekend. Should I be excited? What about all the drugs? Hmmm, could be interesting. I just wish that I could get a chance to tell you all about it. Oh well. Don't blame me about this. Talk to my colleagues on this sight. I have nothing to do with it. Still though, it is bothering me a bit because I do like doing this. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted...

Who is this Angela character anyway?

Well, I've entered the land of the car-owning ones. Yes. I know have a car. Shocking but true. What is this world coming too?

Those female rockers from London Ontario apparently are having some decent success and have already sold 300000 or so records in the States. However, Kittie has only sold about 20000 up here. So what's up with that? We should be promoting our own talent. Perhaps this has something to do with the brain drain that mars our country...

I have to admit that I'm a bit saddened that this is the last entry. I was actually on a roll and to have to end it so suddenly is certainly devastating. But, I guess that I just have to accept it and move on. I'll miss you treasured reader and wish you all the best...

So here is my final deep thought, though in reality it is more a collection of feelings on a number of things. It might be considered a cry for help or maybe just the ramblings of someone with no life. Either way. Enjoy!

My father leaves this beautiful country of ours in a little over two weeks. Interesting. Very. So I guess that I will miss him and my mother when they go. I won't actually say that to their face, especially not his face but deep down I know I will. Let's just say that I have some unresolved and pretty hard to explain issues that I don't fully understand. It seems as though it is my sister who is taking this new part of our lives the hardest. One of the toughest things for her is not having that one home base to rely upon should an emergency arise. While there are other friends and relatives, it's not quite the same as one's parents. I have to admit that I myself feel somewhat anxious about where my life is headed (though that is nothing new), and more specifically, where I'll be and what I'll be doing after the conclusion of the next school year. As per usual, my career path is uncertain (like many folks my age) but it's the not knowing where I'll be that gets me the most. Not being able to come home to the parents when I need a break will be different. Of course, there will be my valued (and under appreciated) friends as well as that bundle of joy, Bailey, but it's not quite the same. This is the point when one truly knows they're getting old.

What else troubles me? Well for one thing, I have the feeling that I'm getting dumber. Now that may sound ridiculous and far fetched but it does seem to be a part of my life. I'm excited about going back to school in the fall (whodda thunk it?), studying and all, especially being with my housemates, my new adopted family, so to speak. But will I be able to keep up with the frenzied pace that goes with being at university? Good question, especially is this paranoid dumbness thing is as true as I fear. It has been a while since I've opened a text book. Still, I'm hoping that I will be able to get back into the groove and I haven't yet forgotten how to read so hopefully not all will be lost. Of course, having worked in a place like Tim Horton's, I know where I don't want to end up in life and this will surely only motivate me to work harder. Or so I hope. Time will tell.

Last year, and this is the first so called public declaration of this, I suffered from an at first severe, but overall moderate depression that first took hold in March and lasted to late last year, early this year. Obviously it had a huge impact on my life and resulted in many changes in my life. Perhaps I should have sought more help than I have, but I am a stubborn person, and as low as I got (pretty damn low, that's all I'll say), I believed that the only person who could truly help or cared was myself. I haven't fully recovered but feel more emotionally stable then I have since my first year at university (great times man). So chalk that up to something else that will now forever be on my mind and still is, though those horrible boughts of sadness no longer plague me. Knowing what could possibly happen has left me with a more cynical view of the world but I do find myself brightening with every passing day. My ultimate goal is to someday be something like the happy go lucky guy that most think or thought that I was. So what's my point? None, just unloading my thoughts. I think about these things often.

Girls...

so how long does it take to get over some one? I was once told 2 years and I beginning to think that they may be right? Goddamn that sucks. Well. So good luck in life all and enjoy it to it's fullest.
