The house that Irony built!

Buying a new house has certainly been an adventure. I had no idea that money could go into nothing so fast and yet that nothing it's spent on be totally necessary. Basically we bought this house so that my kids would have a backyard to play in. Now granted our backyard isn't vast acres, it's good enough for them. My family has been outside for about a month trying to dig fence post holes because we are off a busy road and I don't want the kids getting hit by cars and the likes.

Normally this process of post holes wouldn't take so long if there were not so many damn rocks in the ground here. In fact I believe the term rocks to be inaccurate, craters might be better. Well the height of irony has occured. Last weekend my husband and his brother actually got one side of the yards fence holes rock free, and put up one side of the fence. It was a great day and joy was abounding that finally we were getting somewhere with the damn fence. My brother in law and husband are packing up for the day and putting their tools in the shed etc getting ready to come in for dinner. As my husband walks across the backyard his leg falls through the backyard into vast nothingness. He manages to pull himself out and look down the hole that has been created by his skinny leg and sure enough there is an over six foot deep hole in our yard.

Our "backyard grass" was being held up by ...get this.... cinder blocks and railway ties!!!! I can't help but find this soo funny! I mean we bought a house for a backyard, we're putting up a fence to keep my son and next baby safe and Lou goes walking across the yard and falls into the black hole?!?!??! We spent three hours digging out what was a 8ft deep by 6ft wide hole in our backyard that appears to have once been a well or something. The concept alone of your backyard being held up by rotting old wood is beyond hysterical to me. I mean who would ever think to themselves that that is possible. Apparently it is.

We lamented about what items we would be able to put down this hole to fill it up so that we wouldn't sink to our doom once again. AHA! Rocks! If you can imagine we had enough rocks from fence holes, and from a " rock garden" that was tres ugly to fill that monster pit. Now we just need some top soil and some grass and we will have a normal functioning backyard again. Did I mention that a large bag of top soil cost one hundred dollars. Is that not stupid? IT'S DIRT FOR PETE'S SAKES! Anybody got dirt?

nice hole.. er.. heheh... yeah.

hmm... dirt comes cheaper than that... we usually pay $50 [in the spring] for a trailer full of dirt, $100 gets us a fuckload.. er.. truckload. ;) but, for $100 i hope that was one HUGE bag.

And you'll probably need more dirt come spring 'cuz rocks will settle! :)

What do you need all that dirt for every spring? Or do I want to know?

I'm curious if you bought your house from a builder who might kick you back some sort of a rebate for your trouble. Someone should be responsible for that hidden hazard.

No builder rebate for me. This house is 150 years old. We might as well put cones all around it and enter at your own risk signs. And to Linky! LOL, you are pretty good at that.. GOod one.
