Corporate Names on Places...

You know places like the SkyDome and the National Soccer Stadium and pretty much every other arena and stadium on this side of the planet have had their naming rights sold off to large corporations.

Well a place in Toronto that used to be known as the Hummingbird Centre is now called the Sony Centre. Up until last year I had no idea that Hummingbird wasn't the actual name of the place. Sure enough to my dismay, and my joy of handling one of Hummingbirds products, I figured it out. I guess since the rights to the centre got lost they're not doing so hot.

Anyway, what pisses me off most about these corporate naming rights is the fact that I'm not getting paid anything to say Rogers Centre, or Air Canada Centre, or Sony Centre for the performing arts. I'm getting nothing. Not even a discount on ticket prices for the multi-million dollar name-a-stadium payoff that these companies pay.

I say we call it the O'Keefe Centre, and Skydome, and... shit, ACC doesn't have an original name. But, you get the picture. Fuck corpotate names on landmarks!

I do still call the "Rogers Center" the Skydome. Skydome was a good and appropriate name...rogers center sounds like shit. At least they could have made it like Roger's Skydome lol. I didn't even KNOW about the Hummingbird being changed. Gah. Don't forget the Molson.A.Theatre

oh, i know, there's lots... The amphidump. It's just so sad that nobody can seem to manage an entertainment facility these days without going for the big cash-grab from all these big-ass companies.

I guess it's only acceptable to me if the company actually built it... It's actually getting hard to find places that haven't been corporate branded.

The whole thing drives me nuts. I mean, sure, these companies paid for the right to dick around with the proper names of things, but that shouldn't change what everyone calls them. It's just so... wrong. It would be better if they did what Thunder suggests and incorporate their name and the actual name of the place they're taking over... then everyone could keep calling things by their correct names, and it would be fine... How long, do you s'pose, before they start renaming streets? 'Oh yes, I live on Scotia Bank Drive, right by the corner of Burger King Street'.

Rogers does own the 'Rogers Centre', although, out of habit I still refer to it as the 'Sky Dome'; they own the Blue Jays as well, however, it's not yet acceptable to name major sports teams after their corporate sponsors, yet very acceptable to modify uniforms to indicate the subsidy.

In the MLS there are teams that include the name of their main sponsor into their own....

Sporting events and the industry are a commodity...Unfortunately, this pervades and invades my viewing area.

Just think! Soon there'll be professional sports leagues that have sponsors in the name of the league. Imagine that? Something like the Barclays Premier League would just sound like shit. Oh wait...
