"HA HA" or "What a Waste"

I'll let the article do most of the talking, but I'll give you a quick summary: The Canadian Mint claims a trademark on the word 'One Cent' and the image of the penny. They are demanding roughly $50,000 from the city of Toronto for the use of both in their campaign for $0.01 of the GST for every dollar spent (1/6th of the tax revenues). I'm too lazy to look it up but I'm pretty sure this campaign is for all the provinces/municipalities/cities, since it would be a little crazy to give Toronto all of that cash.

The campaign is for just the City of Toronto.

They claim that because they pay the most, they should get 1/6th of it all right back.

Anyway, back to the stupid lawsuit... I think it's bullshit. If you can prove to me that there were no tax dollars spent on developing the design of the penny or even the term "one cent" then I will happily say, sure the Mint owns the rights.

Hopefully the money that gets wasted on this lawsuit will provide a proper answer (the one I want) that states publicly funded uh, for lack of a better word, "projects" end up in the public domain.

This should apply to most things that the government has their foot in.

Hell, even just a creative commons - attribution, non derivative license would be pretty awesome.

Heh. Toronto... 1/6th of all GST revenues??? I think they can shove it. I do believe there should be a redistribution of tax dollars, since a lot of municipalities have been getting the shaft, but that's a crazy amount they're demanding back.

Others have said it before, Toronto isn't short on tax dollars. It's short on common sense/fiscal responsibility.

I agree.

Some fiscal responsibility could go along way. look at how many times the school board in Toronto has been audited and failed miserably.

TTC always wants more money. For a system that brings in damn near a million dollars a day, they should be doing fine. Of course, if I want a finance report from them... well.. I'll be damned.

I found one. I was wrong, they bring in over 2 mil a day. Salaries, wages, and benefits out weigh their income by about 70 mil/year.

smells like a union...

Indeed it does!

I agree with everything so far. Toronto is full of it if they think they deserve that much. I have a problem with it in principle too, though. This is a socialist country. I don't believe it should be, but for the time being, it is. To suggest that people, or groups of people, should receive from the government in proportion to what they put in, rather than in proportion to what the government believes they need back, conflicts directly with socialism, and the entire basis of our tax system.

RE the lawsuit - D, you raise the best point I think, in regard to tax money. I hadn't seen it that way till you mentioned it, but yes, the Canadian people surely own that trademark, not the mint.

I don't really know what I think about T dot wanting that money.. I don't know enough about what who pays in tax dollars, but it seems a little weird.

As for the lawsuit, what the hell? What about all those charity lottery commercials, that have Canadian money falling on people? The next thing you know the mint will be trying to sue the cancer society. The mint is funded by the federal government, I would assume, which means, as has been pointed out, it's funded by us... which I think means that any canadian citizen should have free use of images of canadian money.... and also, "1 cent" is an ammount of money; that can't be trademarked just 'cause it's on the damn penny. The penny also says "Canada" and "Elizabeth II" Ugh... I suppose it'll be federal tax dollars funding the mint's side of things and municipal tax dollars from Toronto funding the other side... Poor Torontonians are going to paying for this mess twice.
